Admission Requirements

I. Overview 

Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) is an open-access, regional comprehensive university within the Minnesota State system. Students applying to the proposed Pre-Licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (PLBSN) program must first meet SMSU’s general admission requirements for undergraduate study. 

II. Step One – Admission to the University  

These criteria apply to all applicants seeking admission to SMSU, including those intending to enter the PLBSN program. 

Minimum University Requirements: 

All applicants must first meet all SMSU undergraduate admission standards

Click on the Transfer Student Admission Policy for all admission requirements for domestic, Undergraduate, transfer students. 

  • Students admitted to SMSU are designated Pre-Nursing majors until formally admitted to the PLBSN program. 

  • Admission to SMSU does not constitute admission to the PLBSN program. Students interested in nursing are admitted to SMSU as Pre-Nursing majors and must complete a separate, competitive application to the PLBSN program.
