Welcome & Program Overview

Dear BSN Students, 
 
Welcome to the Pre-Licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (PLBSN) Program at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU). You are beginning a rigorous and rewarding journey that prepares you for compassionate, evidence-based, and person-centered nursing practice with a strong emphasis on rural and community health. This handbook is an official policy document of the Department of Nursing and establishes academic, clinical, and professional standards required for progression and completion of the program. Students are responsible for knowing and complying with all policies herein in addition to SMSU and Minnesota State policies. 

The PLBSN curriculum integrates classroom instruction, skills and simulation experiences, and supervised clinical practice. The program emphasizes QSEN competencies, clinical judgment, interprofessional collaboration, informatics, and population health. By enrolling in the program, students agree to adhere to all policies contained in this handbook.
