A-005.1 Satisfactory Academic Progress

This procedure applies to undergraduate students who fail to maintain good academic standing (SMSU Policy A-005, “Academic Standing,” SMSU Procedure A-005.2, “FA Satisfactory Academic Progress”).

Academic Warning

Students, previously in good Academic Standing, who do not meet the Grade Point Average (GPA) or Cumulative Completion Rate (CCR) standard are placed on academic warning. Students placed on academic warning are strongly encouraged to meet with the Assistant Director of Student Success.

  • After one term, if students meet the cumulative standards for good Academic Standing, they will be removed from academic warning and placed in good Academic Standing.
  • After one term, if students meet the standards for good Academic Standing for the term but not cumulatively, they will remain on Academic Warning.
  • After one term, if students do not meet the cumulative standards or term standards for Academic Standing, they will be placed on Academic Suspension.

Academic Suspension

Students, previously on academic warning or academic probation, who do not meet the GPA or CCR standard for good Academic Standing, either cumulative or for the term, will be placed on academic suspension.

  • Academic suspension lasts for two terms.
  • Students may appeal their academic suspension (SMSU Policy G-005, “Academic Appeals Policy”).
  • Students who are reinstated after suspension, either by appeal or by sitting out for two terms, will be placed on Academic Probation.

Academic Probation

Students, previously on academic suspension, who are reinstated must:

  • Meet term GPA of 2.00
  • Meet term CCR of 66.67%
  • Meet with Assistant Director of Student Success
  • Meet with Academic Advisor to create an academic plan

If students meet the term and cumulative standards, they will be removed from academic probation and placed in good academic standing.

If students meet the term standards but not the cumulate standards, they will remain on academic probation.

If students do not meet the term standards, they will be placed on academic suspension.
