Commencement Exercise

All students who have completed degree requirements verified by approved degree checks since the last commencement date may participate in the commencement exercises. Your participation shall be on a voluntary basis. Students who do participate shall wear appropriate attire as determined by the graduating class. Within this context, the term “appropriate” denotes uniformity of attire. Questions regarding commencement exercises should be directed to the Office of the Provost, 537-6246.

Honor Medallions, Cords, Stoles and Academic Accessories

Southwest Minnesota State University will provide honor medallions for students based on their previous semester’s grades. The Medallions will distribute two weeks prior to Commencement. Eligible students will receive an email with instructions on when and where to pick up their cords.

Other Honors Accessories

Graduates are only permitted to wear additional academic accessories (cords, pins, stoles, medallions) from officially recognized SMSU honor societies or student organizations. The student is responsible for obtaining the accessory from the organization or honor society.

Additional groups outside of the sanctioned honor societies and organizations will need to submit a formal request to the Office of the Provost for approval. Requests will be considered from academic honor societies only; requests non-academic groups will not be approved.
